ASHLAND, Ohio – The Gannon wrestling team finished with a 2-1 record at the Mid-Atlantic Duals hosted by Ashland Sunday afternoon. The Golden Knights picked up wins over East Stroudsburg (26-18) and Seton Hill (32-12) after dropping the opening dual to Indianapolis by a 24-10 score.
The Greyhounds won seven of 10 bouts against the Golden Knights en route to the 24-10 win. Indianapolis built a 9-0 lead before Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa. / DuBois Area) earned four points for Gannon with a 19-6 major decision. Sean Floor’s (Westbrookville, N.Y. / Port Jervis) 7-6 decision at 157 pounds brought Gannon within two points with the score at 9-7. However, Gannon managed just one win in the final five bouts in its first dual loss of the season. Bret Terry (Canal Winchester, Ohio / New Albany) earned the other Gannon win with a 3-1 decision at 174 pounds.
The loss sent Gannon to the loser’s half of the dual tournament bracket and allowed Gannon to finish no higher than fifth. The Golden Knights rebounded with wins in the final two duals to take fifth place.
Against East Stroudsburg, Gannon jumped out to a 11-0 lead thanks to a tech fall from Matt Turek (Painesville, Ohio / Madison) and a pin from Adam Weinell (Blairsville, Pa. / Blairsville). Swope gave Gannon a 15-6 lead with a major decision at 149 pounds. Terry, Zack Zelcs (Ridgway, Pa. / Ridgway) and Chris Boyd (Chase City, Va. / Randolph Henry) strung together three straight Gannon wins to secure the team win for the Golden Knights.
In the fifth-place match, Seton Hill won two of the first three matches to hold a 6-3 lead. Swope then earned bonus points for the third straight bout with a 20-5 technical fall, giving Gannon a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Swope’s win started a streak of six straight wins for Gannon, building a 32-6 lead before forfeiting the heavyweight bout. Floor and Adam Greenman (Port Allegany, Pa. / Port Allegany) both recorded pins in the first period of their bouts to rack up bonus points for the Golden Knights.
Swope was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler after a 3-0 performance that included a technical fall and two major decisions.
The host Eagles were tournament champs with a 3-0 record. Gannon previously defeated Ashland 22-18 last week. West Liberty was second, followed by King and Indianapolis to represent the top four. Gannon was fifth, followed by Seton Hill, East Stroudsburg and Belmont Abbey to finish the tournament standings.
