RENO, Nev.— Reno attempted two game-tying three-pointers in the closing seconds Tuesday night, but the Bighorns couldn’t convert and ultimately fell, 114-111, to the Erie Bayhawks in Game Two of the NBA Development League playoffs in the Reno Events Center.
The Erie victory sets up a decisive Game Three, to be played Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Reno Events Center. The winner of Thursday’s contest will face the winner of Wednesday night’s Bakersfield-Rio Grande Valley matchup.
In a game that saw 17 ties and 14 lead changes, Erie broke a 106-106 tie late in the fourth quarter with a Kyle Spain three-pointer. On the ensuing possession, the BayHawks’ Ivan Johnson stole a Donald Sloan pass, drew a foul and converted both free throws to give Erie a 111-106 lead it would not relinquish. Bobby Simmons hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to two, but Johnson converted three-of-four free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Simmons poured in 21 points for Reno, leading six Bighorns in double figures. Marcus Landry and Donald Sloan chipped in 20 points apiece, and Anthony Richardson added 16 for the ‘Horns.
The BayHawks were led by Tasmin Mitchell’s 25-point effort. Erik Daniels scored 24 points off the bench for Erie, and Ivan Johnson recorded the game’s lone double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Game Three is set for Thursday night in the Reno Events Center. Tip time is 7 p.m. PT.
